Doctoral thesis qualification

Once the PhD student has finished the thesis defence, the examining board will issue a report on it and a global qualification following this grading: failed, passed, B (notable, in Spanish grading), and distinction. The secretary of the examining board will draft a minute regarding the doctor certificate awarding, including information on the development of the defence act and the qualification.

If the student requested to achieve the international award on the doctor certificate, the examining board secretary will include in the minute the certification of achievement of the demanded requirements. The examining board president will communicate in public session the qualification achieved.

The examining board can grant the cum laude mention to the thesis if the global qualification is of distinction and there is a unanimous positive secret vote.

Studies lasting and permanence

The maximun duration of the full-time PhD studies will be three years; for part-time studies, five years. This duration will count since the first enrolment in the concept of academic mentoring until the thesis deposit request.

The minimum duration of the studies will be, both for full-time and part-time studies, eighteen months, counting since de student admission until the thesis deposit request.

If the thesis deposit request has not been submitted after the established period, the CAPD could authorize its extension, which would be of a year in full-time studies and two in part-time studies.

The CAPD can authorize, after a motivated request by the student, the temporal discharge in the programme.

The permanent discharge of a PhD student implies the impossibility for the student to enrol in the same programme during three academic years. The following are causes for permanent administrative discharges:

  • Not enrolling in the programme during an academic year.
  • Not having presented the research plan within the established deadlines.
  • Not having passed the education complements in four consecutive terms.

The following are causes for permanent educational discharges:

  • Receiving two consecutive negative reports in the annual evaluation or for the passing of the initial research plan.
  • Not having passed the thesis defence in the given deadlines.
